Here's a grab from the trunks of summer 2004. It's a cartoon pool party, made to fit in circa the old days, when records were dirty and things didn't have to make as much sense.

It kind of reminds me of old candy you find that, after you convince yourself that it's still edible, is actually not bad. Like when, as a kid, you find one last Halloween 3 Musketeers, in February.

It's kind of hard, but that good kind of hard that's fun to melt up and break.

Madvillain is made of one part Madlib, the other part MF Doom. Each has gone on to be a part of hip hop notoriety, including Danger Mouse, Ghostface, Talib Kwali, and even Gorrilaz and Erykah Badu.

Last night I took a musical shower.

Wildbirds and Peacedrums were in Los Angeles last night, washing away all the average, normalmusic that had accumulated on my musical skin over the last year. Mariam was the shampoo, silking me with her gypsy / bjork-pop vocal lather. Andreas was like a pulsing shower head, moving water in time with his unconventional drum kit, which included a hi hat the size of a bath mat. And that was it - no backing band, only a keyboardist who was really not even there half the time.

Oh, just a silly old contest between the best places to dance. And the winner is...a TIE between dancing at a concert, and dancing in the car! The car dance seemed like an unlikely contender, but apparently it really pulled you guys through last week. Good show.

Most of you are familiar with the other answers to the vote: dancing at a concert, on a break at work, and "in the home." But if you're not familiar with car dancing, you'll want to be. There's something special about dancing in that little thang. Maybe because it's really so inconvenient - you can't really move around that much, and you definitely can't shake your crown jewel. Car dancing is truly a struggle of joy. One thing I like to do is get all the vents going, you know, and the mirrors, wipers, whatever. I want to party with my car's entire feature package.

A: Work hard / feeling of accomplishment week, sprinkled with five minute friend breaks and our amazing sun setting later into the night

B: Silly / carefree week, taking it a bit easier and giggling more than usual, capped off with a trip to the hills and out of the routine (maybe bring some heath bars)

I've got my music camera focused on rap these days.

Who knows why? Maybe it's because the music camera really shines when the subject matter is hip hop. Maybe it's because the grass is greener on the other side, and I really grew up on 90's RnB and alternative rock.

Here's a new track I found from Kosha Dillz. He's this Jewish rapper, and also the only rapper I'm aware of who is smiling in his website photos.

Three things I like about this song:

1. 3 languages - U can't touch this.

2. That synth gets really weird at the end.

3. I like Kosha Dillz.

I also like that he looks a little like Dave Matthews in this photo.

I know it's not a moving picture, but with that face and expression, AND THAT BASS LINE, who needs moving pictures? If you're like me, you've already been moving to it in your seat.

Unless you're one of those stand up computer types. You know who you are; you've got your terminal on the wall. (Probably not the worst approach to keeping yourself off of facebook.)

If you're not too familiar with Gil Scott Heron, here's a little bit for you. He was one of the forefathers of rap. He put out some beat poetry in the early 1970's that sounded real different than anything before. He was more than that, though. He was his own man, he always did things his way. He had a lot of messages. And a lot of problems. Apparently just last year he was openly smoking crack during an interview. But through it all, he delivered some real gems and really changed music.

So here's to Gil Scott.

Mexico is an amazing place. You should have some. I had some thinks while I was away. One is called Dirty Love. Who knows, maybe you'll be dancing to Dirty Love sometime in your future. I'll tell you more later.

There is something crazy going on with Flight Attendants

I smell something fishy in the air. And it's not the Pacific Northwest, though I did just fly in from there.

Flight attendants. What are they doing up there?

So I'm on this JetBlue flight, getting ready to be back in LA. And in walks this asian flight attendant. BUT HOLD UP!!! She is totally decked head to toe in official Delta Airlines flight attendant threads. Is this...allowable? I feel like I'm in Boston at the Garden and some husky sensation in a LeBron jersey just walked into my row. Am I caught in the crossfire?

I decide to nap it out.

In fact, I'm out so cold that I don't even get a chance to put my seat back after takeoff. No matter, there are greater things at stake. Holding steady, I miss the drink order AND delivery. Still got it together. Then, somehow, I wake up ten seconds before JBleu and Creu are about to bring snacktime to my row. I get my looks, got JBlue no. 1 & 2 on lock in the aisle, and I'm shrugging shoulders with Delta Tai Chi on my right. JBlue 1 closes in. I make my selection: Doritos Munchie Mix. Mmmmm. This is gonna make me real competitive.

Then the air falls completely silent. Two corporations about ta BUBBLE with each other, right across my lap.

JBlue One is on the mic.

"Cookies, chips, or crackers?"

"Cookies."

I breathe in a little. Is this the calm before the storm?

Then this: "Would you like some chips with that?"

WHAT?WHAT?WHAT? Is this some kind of fakeout? What kind of advanced strategy is being utilized here? Do these corporations have proper audits? I am stunned as a bag of Terra Blues Chips is stretched forth across the row's airspace into Delta Tai Chi's snack traffic control and parked right next to Linden's Chocolate Chippers.

What kind of windy wonder is this? Did the US just sell Libya equipment they will later use against the US again? Do they realize what she can do with TWO snack items? Or is this the ultimate betrayal - being sweetly sincere while at the very moment slipping Mickey the pill?

Nope. And she ate the whole thing.

I guess there are alliances out there stronger than you and I would like to believe.

My story

Here's a little story for you. It's the story of how I came to you. A penwoman from the Northeast wrote it. You can read her other stuff here.

Behold:

Producer/Groove Architect/Funktrovert Fresh Big Mouf isborn of miracles, and we’re not just talking about how many marshmallows he can fit into his massive maw. Aaron was born a blind child (seriously) but had his sight restored via surgery at four months, and thus narrowlyescaped becoming the next Ray Charles. Growing up amongst straight-laced but sweet-faced Mormons who are more at home cooking casseroles in the kitchen than kicking it in the club, Fresh Big Mouf went to many dance parties on a quest for joyful beats. He was looking to fall in love, searching for more dance music that was fun yet self-aware, funk-infused but not too old. One day, he determined there must be more. Excellent dance music needs to be multiplied and replenished, and thus he became Fresh Big Mouf, a music procreator.

After brief stints of middle school bands and mashups in his dorm room recording studio, at the age of 21 he started creating original stuff, moving from Indie to funkdance to uncategorizable in appropriate succession. He soon began to focus on producing artists such as Fictionist and Eyes Lips Eyes, but in his spare time, he never stopped tinkering with dance tracks for neighborhood get downs. He writes and records in vans, in studios, in parking lots while his bandmates bum around Guitar Center. It can happen anywhere.

Give his EP a listen, and you’ll realize something. Fresh Big Mouf proves that you can be a good musician, nay, a great musician, but you don’t have to be so uptight about it. It’s hard to watch one of his videos without thinking of the word “cartoonish.” In the best way, not in a Pee-Wee Herman post-arrest way. He moves like Rudy Davis from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, like an upright snake. And he jumps around on stage with verve, with joie de vivre, the joie that echoes in his songs. With his latest EP, Doberman, he is sharing the tracks he’s been emailing to his pals for years with everybody. We’re all pals here.

Fresh Big Mouf’ll be jumping up and down, fall on his butt and jump back up, still grinning, like he was wearing rubber unders. Unabashed. Full of color and motion. As are we all, just friends jamming around at a house party, letting it all out.

I have switched seats.

You see, where I tush this bunch is important stuff. Mixing records ain't no casual saunter in your local arboretum. It's more like a long, satisfying day riding through the undiscovered Western USA on some kind of thoroughbred, and that thoroughbred must be USDA top choice, lean mean mixing machine. I need a sturdy, stalwart companion to get me through these cloudless skies.

That's why I've chosen this: the drum throne.

For the longest time, I have been tushioning with a dining chair, and that's been nice and smooth.

But let me tell you: from the drum throne I feel I can preside with a steady hand over my kingdom. It feels like the right place to send my electribe decrees from. And it also helps with my lower back. You cannot buy this kind of majesty.

I try to sit like this.

Once in a while I'm going to introduce you to a new guy or two.

Let today be the first time. It is with great pride that I introduce you to Toro Y Moi. Get this: his real name is Cazwick Bundick. How could that guy NOT be good?

It reminds me of the music from the exercise videos we had around the house in the 1980's.

Let's not split any hairs over this. "New Beat" contains easily one of the most freaky synth lines I have beheard in quite some time. It has been playing in The Pop Oven, my studio, for the past few days.
